To My Fellow Architects
Hello, my name is Adrian Forbes. I won’t share a great deal of detail about myself; I suspect that in the articles to come you will gather those puzzle pieces yourself.
It is my agenda to consider and influence the designs of tomorrow and subsequently entertain your intentions and opinions on these but much more then that…it is to motivate you to action. I would like to begin by sharing a glance into the reflection of yesterday, in order to provide support for this proposal of the future.
As a human race it is incredible the accomplishments that we have made within the last century. By no means is the list provided below complete, it is intended to identify the formula of success contrasted with the ill effects of time. Pay attention to the dates….
- 1903- Wright Brothers take flight
- 1969- Moon landing
- 2004- First manned private spaceflight
- 1908- Ford’s automobile assembly line
- 1997- Hybrid car (1899- First electric car)
- 2007- Hydrogen Car
- 1957- First personal computer
- 1976- Apple computer
- 1990- World Wide Web
- 1997- Google
- 1973- First mobile phone
- 1984- First commercially available cell phone
- 2007- IPhone
- 1931-First wind energy plant
- 1938- Nuclear Fission discovered
- 1951- First nuclear power plant
- 1954- Solar Battery is invented
- 1981- First large scale solar-thermal power plant
- 1938- Nuclear Fission discovered
I left out many more; the numbers have a tendency to blur together at the end. Here is the argument…life changing discoveries were made and yet decades went by before they were implemented into everyday life…why? If we consider the last decade, what major technical accomplishments come to mind immediately…the IPhone?
We slowed down at the beginning of this new century…. perhaps the disaster of 2001 was a factor; perhaps like kids we wanted to take the time to play with our new toys before creating new ones; perhaps there was a generation of dreamers and not doers.
Whatever the case may have been, we now stand at the brink of a new technological era. Only recently has everything from extended space travel to AI intelligence and automated cars to virtual reality to the global use of exclusively renewable energy to crypto currency to 3d printing been put on a table reachable even by the general public. Our lives are about to change and there are those that will observe and those that will be at the forefront. We are the architects of tomorrow, in our minds is the vision needed to make an even greater world then this one. Failures will come and they will be recycled into successes. What I say today may spark action by you midday and your efforts may become tomorrow’s reality.
In 2014, Elon Musk set a precedent by releasing all of the patents on his electric cars “…in the spirit of the open source movement.” Initially he felt that patents were of benefit but realized later that they merely served to stifle progress. He now believes that “….the world would all benefit from a common, rapidly-evolving technology platform.” He is a visionary, and will go down amongst the greats of history, like Da Vinci, Tesla, Einstein. You and I can have the same part in the next generations timeline. Let your dreams become reality, your abilities a gift to the world, and your wisdom a presence in the future.
The articles to come will be discussions about not only what is around the corner but the effects, who will start these changes, and why. Opinions, when shared respectfully and with intent of progression, evolve into insights and solutions. I invite you please to not just approach this passively but to take a part, share your thoughts and have a part in designing a greater tomorrow. I look forward to meeting you all.
